what went wrong? today tuesday, july 2nd, 2013. from nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and savannah guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. good morning, everyone. welcome to today on a tuesday morning. >> i'm willie geist along with natalie morales. thousands attended the service for the firefighters that died battling a dangerous wildfire. >> this is a community in mourning and the fire is spreading and threatening more homes. we'll talk to the widow of one of the fallen. andrew ashcraft. she shared to us the final photo he texted her showing him and fellow member of the team moment before the fire made its devastating fatal turn. but first, the latest on the investigation.

let's get right to nbc's miguel almaguer. good morning to you. >> reporter: savannah, good morning. in the next day or two firefighters hope to know more about what happened on the day so many died here. as they search for answers, a community grieves. the 19 fallen firefighters gave their lives to protect their community. >> the city of prescott lost, the state of arizona and the nation. these were the best. they were on call to go anywhere. >> reporter: 14 of the victims were in their 20s. young men who were starting families, pursuing their dreams and were in the prime of their lives. >> i was very proud of him. he was a good kid. and he's going to be so missed. >> reporter: last night, baseball's arizona diamondbacks wore black arm bands and unveiled special yarnell jerseys for the 19 fallen men. the hot shot team from prescott was caught in the middle of a

violent fire storm. when emergency crews reached the team, it was too late. their fire shelters couldn't protect them as flames quickly closed in. >> this was their backyard. for fire to overrun the entire crew has all of us scratching our head and wondering what happened. >> reporter: with the yarnell hill fire still raging out of control this morning, fire officials now believe an estimated 50 homes were destroyed. but the loss in prescott isn't measured in property. instead, in lives. this somber salute, a convoy of coroner vans carrying the body of the victims. >> if this day on the line i should lose my life, lord bless my hotshot crew, my children, and my wife. >> reporter: a community paying tribute to a young and fearless team that will never come home.

the hotshot crew that perished belonged to a group of 20. the sole survivor was said to be in the unit's vehicle and was not injured by the fire. meantime, this blaze has scorched some 8,000 acres. it is on the move and threatening some 200 homes. savannah, back to you. >> miguel almaguer, thank you. julian ashcraft's husband was one of the firefighters that died on sunday. juliann good morning to you. >> good morning savannah. >> let me start by saying how sorry we are to hear of your loss. you have little kids. this must come as such a shock. how are you doing? >> well, it's a sad day but we're hanging in there. we have a lot of support from the community. a lot of support from the other wives going through the same thing and we're doing the best we can. just one day at a time. >> i know one of the reasons you're here talking to us this morning is because you want everybody to know what a

wonderful man your husband was. what would you want people to learn about him? >> not just him, all the 19 men that lost their lives and of course i'm partial and i love dearly and miss dearly my husband and the father of my children. he was the most amazing man. best person i know. a contagious smile, a heart of gold. that's why he chose to do what he did and work where he worked. he wanted to protect the community he lived in and loved. and the 19 men, all of them, they really bonded together. and i want people to know that in our time of mourning we want people to know they were heros. they are heros. they were heros in our homes, in our community, and the people they helped spare and our kids remember them as heros as well. >> they were really the elite of the elite and i know your husband in particular was rookie of the year in 2011. this is incredibly dangerous work.

it goes without sa. what did it mean to him to be on the front lines, to help people? >> it was everything to him. outside of the love he shared for his family members, hotshot firefighting was his life. he had his priorities in line but when he was there he would tell me they say jump and i say how high. the main goal was to save lives. it was a blessing it came on the end when so many things were done by the hotshots. our community was so proud of them and we're still so proud of them. it means everything to the way people have reached out. they loved what they did. these men worked together. they lived together. they fought fires together, and they died together doing what they love. >> i know on sunday you exchanged a text message with

your husband in the late afternoon and it may have been -- >> yes. >> -- just a couple hours before he passed. can you share with us what he said? >> sure. we had a series of text messages throughout that morning. he let me know that they had been assigned to the fire in yarnell. at that point they were focusing more on people's valley. he let us know he loved us and missed us already which was a common thing for him to do when he would go on a fire. because of the dangers of the job he would always tell us he loved us. he got to the fire and i had gone to church with our four children and our oldest son gave a talk in church this past sunday that he was sad that he missed so he messaged me and told me to let him know he was proud of him. he said along the same lines that he was missing our family and that for whatever reason that this fire was wild and he said it looked like people's valley was starting to burn and

obviously the goal is for them to avoid any structure on fire. so it was wild he said. and i sent him pictures of what we were doing and the kids swimming and he sent me a photo back of where he was sitting and what the fire looked like for them from their lunch spot and it still did not look at catastrophic as it turned out to be, but it was interesting to have that perspective, to know what life was like for him on the fire lines and what he risked day in and day out. he got back to me and said i wish i was in the swimming pool. he also followed it up. i told him through our text messages that our daughter had been saying, when he was watching the thunderstorm she said daddy needs to see this and i let him know via text message she had said that. he said we could sure use rain over here. that was the last i heard from him. i sent a reply that said will you be sleeping out there

tonight? and of course there was no reply. they all laid out there that night. >> you have our love and our sympathy and greatest admiration. we wish you the best. thank you for sharing his story and the story of the other firefighters who were so brave. we really appreciate it. >> thank you. they are heros. >> you know savannah, you look at the photographs of the family. andrew, 29 years old. four children, none of whom are older than the age of 6. z they need a lot of help from the community and their family but a very strong woman this morning. >> beautiful family. >> it was so important for her to let the world know about him and his colleagues and how special they were and what they did and she said it, they died fighting to protect people. that's what they were all about and they have our hearts this morning. that is for sure. >> what courage, though, to hear her words and, wow, just to be

able to speak like that and really represent the best of what they're going through right now. >> there are 18 more stories just like that one, unfortunately. we turn to other news this morning, a rare meeting between president obama and former president george w. bush overnight as the president wraps up his trip to africa. chuck todd is there in tanzania for us. chuck, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, willie. you know, it's rare for two presidents to be in washington at the same time. rare, still for them to be at the same event but here we are some 8,000 miles away from the west wing in tanzania and there stood president obama and bush who were here to pay tribute to some of the first americans killed by an osama bin laden lead terrorist attack. walking side by side presidents obama and bush together in tanzania at the u.s. embassy for a ceremony. a moment of silence to honor the victims of the 1998 al qaeda

bombing. 10 were killed that day and more than 85 were injured. a joint appearance, a last minute add to the schedule. it appeared the only bush and obama that would appear together were laura and michelle. >> i like this woman. >> michelle obama at the invitation of laura bush attended a bush institute organization 2-day summit that began today. current and former first ladies got candid at the white house. >> there are prison elements to it. but it's a really nice president. >> with a chef. >> you can't complain. but there's definitely, you know, elements that are confining. i love my husband, but sometimes when he has like five things to do at one time, it's funny to watch it. you don't know where your jacket is right now. can't find that shoe, mr.

"proof of heaven." it's a popular book written by a neurosurgeon who said he went to hen and came back but one researchers is saying there's holes in that story. we're going to begin this half hour. new developments tied to the arrest of nfl star aaron hernandez. nbc's stephanie gosk joins us now with the latest on the investigation. stephanie, good morning to you. >> reporter: good morning, savannah. well, without bail aaron hernandez is going to be sitting here at the county jailhouse for months or a year waiting for his trial. we're learning new details about what life is like here and how an nfl player accused of murder is being handled carefully. aaron hernandez is not held in general population. he is in a unit with fewer than ten other inmates. >> he has quite a bit of a transition from his lifestyle on the outside to his lifestyle on the inside. >> reporter: the nfl player is

allowed to leave the 7x10 foot cell for three hours a day to use the exercise yard, phone, and common area. no direct contact with other inmates. his safety is a concern but so far there's no threats. >> just have to pay close attention to the fact that he is a high-profile person and keep a close ear to the ground. >> reporter: outside the jailhouse, new england patriots have an offer for any fan with an 81 jersey. turn it in and get another for a player that will be on the team this fall. other fans are putting them on ebay. one sold for $1,000. the seller just wanted it out of the house. hernandez pled not guilty to first-degree murder and multiple gun charges. he is accused of orchestrating the execution of odin lloyd with two other men at his side. one of those men, ernest wallace turned himself in to police in florida after massachusetts police posted a wanted alert with his picture. >> he's charged with accessory

after the fact. >> reporter: in court, wallace did not fight his extradition to massachusetts, where he'll likely be arraigned this week on an accessory to murder charge. the other man, carlos ortiz, is being held without bail after pleading not guilty to a legal weapons possession. so far the only person charged with odin lloyd's murder is hernandez. raising the possibility that ortiz and wallace may cooperate with prosecutors in exchange for lesser charges says legal expert david schwartz. >> you testify and you testify to what you saw that night and the eyewitness testimony on the part of ortiz and on the part of wallace will make the prosecutor's case. >> reporter: former patriot's wide receiver deon branch spoke to a newspaper defending hernandez. he says he's a great guy and close friend and he hopes he didn't have anything to do with this murder. back to you guys. >> stephanie gosk, thank you so much. >> let's get a check of the weather from maria larosa, who's

92 degrees. by tomorrow more isolated thunderstorms and dry you out by independence day. willie, over to you. >> thank you very much. now to the trial of george zimmerman where jurors heard from him for the first time. nbc's kerry sanders is at the courthouse in sanford, florida. kerry, good morning. >> reporter: willie, good morning. george zimmerman did not take the stand but his own words and video and audio and written statements were presented to the jury in this second-degree murder case. the jury now heard from the accused, george zimmerman in the neighborhood where he shot and killed trayvon martin. >> you know the name of the person that died? >> trayvon? >> trayvon. >> reporter: and in several interviews at the police department. the questioning began the evening of the shooting and lasted over a four-day period. sometimes without a camera. >> he jumped out from the bushes and he said what the [ bleep ]

is your problem homie. >> reporter: these statements recorded the night of trayvon martin's death. >> i said, help me, help me, he's killing me. and he puts his hand on my nose and on my mouth and says you're going to die tonight. >> reporter: zimmerman went on to say trayvon martin tried to smash his head in the concrete. three days laider, lead detective chris serino and investigator doris singleton sat down with zimmerman again. >> when he walked up to your car, why didn't you say anything to him. >> i guess fear. i didn't want to confront him. >> reporter: and later with the video off but the audio still recording, they challenged zimmerman's assertion that he shot martin in self-defense. >> you wanted to catch him. you wanted to catch the bad guy. >> reporter: zimmerman's answer, no. he pled not guilty to second-degree murder. at one point, serino bluffed him

telling him there was a video of what happened that february night. >> i believe his words -- i was hoping somebody would video tape it. >> reporter: defense attorney mark o'mara continued. >> the fact that george zimmerman said to you thank god i hope somebody did videotape the event or the whole event, what -- his statement, what did that indicate to you? >> either he was telling the truth, or he was a complete pathological liar, one or the two. >> reporter: serino's conclusion -- >> you think he was telling the truth? >> yes. >> reporter: as we go live to the courtroom, detective serino is now back on the stand testifying. the detective had prepared an arrest affidavit to charge george zimmerman with manslaughter, but no arrest was ever made. a special prosecutor later assigned to the case brought the charges that led to this second-degree murder charge. >> in sanford, kerry sanders. thank you. lisa bloom is our legal analyst. good morning. >> good morning.

>> the jury hears, audio, video, n court. what inconsistencies did you hear? >> there were a number of them. the biggest one goes to was he following trayvon martin. sometimes he says he was but then one said no i wasn't. i was going to see the name of the street. even though he lives there, there's only three streets in the gated community and he's the neighborhood watch coordinator. >> inconsistencies are a problem enough to undermine the case? >> that's for the jury to decide. there are a number of them. he also says trayvon martin jumped out from the bushes. there are no bushes in the area. ultimately, detective serino, at the end of his testimony, said i believe him. i believed his story of self-defense. so even though there are a number of inconsistencies, the toughest investigator on the case believed george zimmerman. >> serino also went on to say, he's the lead investigator, he didn't consider zimmerman's injuries to be life threatening. does that undermine zimmerman's case he acted in self-defense? >> that certainly helps the prosecution.

either way, the minute tickets go on sale, you go online credit card ready and you're shut out. entire arenas sold out like that. where do those tickets really go? this morning, we're pulling back the curtain to show you who is really getting those seats. they're the hottest tickets in town, from bieber, to pink, to one direction. seeing one direction would be a dream come true. for this girl, 11-year-old jayden. so her mom tried to surprise her going online to buy tickets the second they went on sale. >> 10:00 claimed i pressed for first available. sorry no tickets available. it's become impossible for the average person to get tickets. >> so what's really going on here? john potter is with a fans

rights group funded by stub hub and what he found may stun you. by the time tickets officially go on sale, most may already be unavailable. >> a huge percentage of the tickets will have already been sold before you have a chance to buy the two they want. >> who is getting them? >> the high end credit card holders that get the e-mail, they're giving them to the fan club and many go to the artist or to the venue. >> and he says the numbers for many concerts are staggering. for a one direction show in new jersey this month box office records show at least 64% of tickets were held back or sold to special groups. unavailable to everybody else. then there's maroon 5. at a recent concert, same thing. 64% earmarked for vips and special groups and even higher

for pink. for her concert at new jersey's izod center, at least 77% of tickets were reserved for those special groups. the rest of the public had to fight for what's left. but the most dramatic example is justin bieber. at his concert in fresno, california, 92% of tickets went to special groups or were held back entirely. that means of more than 12,000 seats, only 940 were set aside for the official sale date. >> this is very secretive. there's only a few people in the room when they decide who is going to get tickets. they don't want us to know that artists are holding back tickets and venues are holding back tickets. >> none of the artists would comment for the story but live nation told us free sales are open to the public and fans can participate in easily accessible ways. but critics say they're not being open with the fans. >> we're going to get shafted as

wear lots of sunscreen with spf greater than 30. apply it liberally or frequently. wear a hat, wear protective clothing. avoid high altitudes and be careful of things that cause you to burn, water, sand, concrete increase tris k. >> there's debate about how to go over a number. >> go above at least a 30. if you have at least a 30 you're blocking out 90% of the test. test. test. red flags that you may have a medical problem? something that's not so minor. >> if you develop fever and chills, light headed, dizzy or nauseous or large blizers

receive help. >> one thing is take an antiinflammatory like aspirin or advil. it will help with the fever and flu-like symptoms you can get. >> i want to ask you quick about whatnot to do. that's as important as anything else. >> the things you don't want to do is apply cologne or perfume. don't use exfoliates. don't shave. >> really. >> i see you have milk out. >> cool compresses work well and one of my favorite things is to take a little bit of milk. use real milk. not soy. use cow milk and mix it with a little bit of water and you can

create a cool compress that's soothing. you can apply this. it contains lactic acid and enzymes that are soothing and follow with that cortisone. you can get it over the counter. biafine is a burn cream and you can get that from your doctor. >> natural remedies here. how do these work? >> water is very hydrating. you can become dehydrated and develop the symptoms where you don't feel well. you also want to eat fruits and vegetables with antioxidants. blueberries, strawberries, tomatoes. they'll keep the inflammation down and prevent it from worsening. >> get those in our system right away. now the oatmeal comes out. i love this. >> these are all home remedies you can use. most people have these at home. you can create an oatmeal paste or pour it into your bathtub.
